Non-intrusive Quality Estimation of VoIP Speech based on Network Performance Metrics

Abstract(in English) With the increasing demand for IP telephony services using VoIP technology, techniques for monitoring the speech quality are required in order to manage the quality of VoIP services constantly on a call-by-call basis. Since it is known that the speech quality of VoIP is affected by IP network performance factors, non-intrusive quality of service (QoS) monitoring methods using passive network performance measurement is watched with keen interest. In recent years, VQmon technology has been proposed as a non-intrusive quality monitoring. Although the monitoring function of the post-arrived packet behavior event at the VoIP-gateway is effective for estimating subjective speech quality, the estimating algorithm does not consider differences in implementations of VoIP-gateway products. Therefore, we propose a non-intrusive QoS monitoring method that works in conjunction with ITU-T Recommendation P.862 "PESQ" to avoid this problem. We compare the performance of VQmon technology and the proposed method in term of the estimation accuracy of speech quality. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional one, achieving sufficient accuracy for use in quality monitoring of VoIP services.
