Constructing a Diaphragm Model for Automated Segmentation from Torso CT Images

Abstract(in English) The diaphragm locating between the thoracic cavity and abdominal cavity in human torso region is an important tissue that should be extracted firstly during the anatomical structure recognition based on torso CT images. Due to the fact that the diaphragm hangs together with the muscle and the other inner organ regions which have the similar density in CT images, it is difficult to identify the diaphragm directly using a gray-level thresholding or region growing method. In this research, we use the relation between the diaphragm and surface of lung regions to identify the diaphragm automatically. Our method decides the location of diaphragm by deforming a pre-defined thin-plate model to match the diaphragmatic surfaces of lung regions. We applied this method to 287 CT cases and confirmed the good effects of this method. We also show the result of thoracic cavity identification as an application of diaphragm extraction finally.
