A Study on Flattening Virtual Organs Based on Surface Normals in Generating Their Unfolded Views

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we describe a method for generating unfolded views of virtual organs based on deformation of volumetric images. Unfolded views are very useful for diagnosis because they can visualize at a glance the entire wall of an organ that has a large cavity. Our previous method uses a set of hexahedra to approximate the shape of the organ which is then stretched over a plane to obtain a planar stretched shape. However, it is quite difficult to stretch the approximate shape consisting of hexahedra to a planar shape. Also, manual intervention is required for modification of external forces applied to the shape each time it deforms. The method we propose here uses surface normals of the stretched shape to automatically determine the external forces and applies them to the shape to flatten it. We applied our method to eleven cases of abdominal X-ray CT images. The experimental results showed that our method could flatten virtual organs satisfactorily and generate their unfolded views faster than the previous method.
