Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The techniques utilized in reliability engineering, like FTA and FMEA, are well applied to the field of system safety. Both fields of reliability and safety engineering seem to have kept contact with each other through those techniques. It can be also said that those disciplines are mutually quite different branches of learning because of the fact of still keeping the contact. Electronic and computer-based technologies have been increasingly applied to safety-critical systems. Obviously, the current trend in international standards of the safety-critical systems is to move away from the design-based standards as a potential hindrance for exporters and toward those based on the performance of safety. In order to comprehend fully the new standards like those of functional safety, it is required to acquire at least the basics of both safety and reliability engineering. Thus, it is of urgent necessity for higher institutions of learning to produce enough talents having mastered the disciplines.
