Tapered MMI-based integrated-optical combiners for coherent receivers

Abstract(in English) We analyze the characteristics of tapered multimode interference (MMI)-based coherent lightwave combiners, and theoretically confirm that the stable and clear multimode interference images exist in the tapered MMI combiners. In order to confirm the performance of the tapered MMI combiner, Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) with the tapered multimode interferometer (MMI) combiner are demonstrated on SOI substrates. Measured results show that the tapered MMI combiners work well. Due to the advantages of no end-facet reflection, easy extension to multi-port configuration, high tolerance for fabrication errors and a compact size, the tapered MMI structure is a good candidate as coherent lightwave combiners used in large-scale photonic integrated circuits.
