Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants read two types of Japanese double object constructions - one in the order subject (S) - indirect object (IO) - direct object (DO) - verb (V) and another in S-DO-IO-V order. The aim of the present study was to verify two competing analyses concerned with the word order of Japanese double object constructions, as each predict differently in terms of whether the two word orders contain a filler-gap dependency. One of the analyses predicts that both orders are free of filler-gap dependencies while the other that only the S-DO-IO-V does contain a filler-gap dependency. ERPs to the third noun phrase of the S-DO-IO-V order showed an early positiviy relative to the S-IO-DO-V order. The result suggests that the processing of S-DO-IO-V order is different from that of the S-IO-DO-V order and that the former is a derived word order.
