Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We recognize bi-level images as gray-level images as a whole. We have investigated and presented a one-dimensional visual model for human visual information processing, which is executed through external world, retina, and finally brain. The purpose of this paper is to propose an objective evaluation method, based on the above visual model, for modulated bi-level images. For this purpose, we made extensive experiments for five kinds of modulation method - pulse density four division, simple two value, random dither, least mean error, ordered dither method-in which each of the images we evaluated both subjectively and objectively. As a subjective evaluation, we used the meaning opinion score (MOS). The measure of objective merits of an image is defined as degree of approximation of the reconstructed images by our model. The results of a series of experiments show that ranking by subjective evaluation, coincides with one by the proposed measure. Thus the proposed visual model and the measure of approximation have turned out to be effective and valid.
