Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose an automatic lipreading method by using the KL transform of the lip features, which are defined by the proportions of heights and widths of shapes formed by the inside parts of mouth during utterance. Those lip features can be relatively easily extracted from gray level images, and are not affected by changing the distance between the mouth and the CCD camera. Therefore, those lip features are easily treated in applications. We give experimental results of a test involving recognition among a set of 8 words to show effectiveness of the method.
