Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) There have been many reports on sound localization in a horizontal plane and in a median plane but very few reports on sound localization in other planes such as a transverse plane or front vertical plane. In this study, experiments were carried out in a room in which 25 speakers had been arranged in a vertical plane at 17 cm intervals in a 5×5 pattern, and each subject, sitting 2.0 m from the vertical plane, was asked to locate the sound sources of white noise signals, the conditions of which were changed during the experiment, in order to determine the degree of agreement between perception of sound signals and that of sound sources. It was found that deviation between the perception of sound signals and perception of sound sources was greater in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction, with a tendency for the deviation to be toward the center. The vertical deviation was 2 to 19 times greater (average of 6.4 times greater) than the horizontal deviation. The main differences in localization of sound sources by the subjects were in the vertical direction, although there was some degree of individual variation. These differences are thought to be due to individual differences in head-related trnnsfer function(HRTF)
