Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is necessary to develop human interfaces which extensive people, i.e. senior citizen, physically handicapped person, child and adult can use easily as the personal computer widely spreads. If the eye position can be detected in real-time with a video camera, the positional information can be used for a non-contact type pointing device. In this study, we developed a real-time eye tracking system using a partial eye template and surrounding eye features. Then we developed a character input system using the real-time eye tracking system. The real-time eye tracking system could track either one or both eyes with 13 frame/s in speed. Furthermore, the eye(s) were detected up to ± 30 degrees in the view plane rotation, and up to 1.6 times in the scale enlargement. The detection rate of single eye was more than 97 % and that of both eyes was more than 94 % under a fixed condition. The character input system accepted Arabic numerals and calculation symbols by the eye position, carried out four fundamental rules of arithmetics calculation, and displayed the calculation result on the screen. The characteristics of the character input system are that extensive people can input characters on the screen by adjusting the eye position without touching, confirming the input characters.
