Effects of Masticatory-Muscie Forces on the Temporomandibular Joint Loading : Numerical simulation using a 3-D rigid-body jaw model

Abstract(in English) In attempt to clarify the control mechanism of the stomatognathic system during biting, we have been analyzing TMJ loading, employing a 2-D static model of the jaw. To expand the analysis into a three-dimensional one, we developed a simple 3-D rigid body model of the jaws, and then analyzed the loading during unilateral biting, in order to elucidate how each masticatory-muscle force affects the bite force and TMJ loading on both the working and non-working sides. The results were summarized as follows: 1) the activation of the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles on both sides generates the bite force, and that on the non-working side has a function of reducing TMJ loading on the working side, as already recognized; 2) the activation of the lateral pterygoid muscle on both sides does not function in the generation of the bite force, as expected from our previous 2-D analysis; and 3) the activation of the medial pterygoid muscle on both sides also generates the bite force, and that on the non-working side deviates the direction of the TMJ-loading vector on the working side latero-posteriorly.
