Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Following the scientific success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), a new satellite-based precipitation measuring program, called the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM), is currently planned. GPM will be a constellation-type mission involving a fleet of nine satellites. In this fleet, the "core" spacecraft carries both a multi-channel polarized passive microwave radiometer (PMW) and a dual frequency Ku-Ka band radar system. The radar is expected to provide information on the drop size distribution (DSD) of precipitating particles, enabling accurate estimation of rainfall rate from both the radar data and PMW data, This paper describes the principles of retrieving the DSD parameters from the dual frequency radar and possible issues involved in the actual retrieval algorithm.
