Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An acquisition and tracking terminal has been developed for optical inter-satellite communications. This terminal is composed of a gimbal using an active universal joint(AUJ)and a wide and fine pointing mechanism(WFPM). In acquisition mode, by using the features that the WFPM has a wide moving angle and fine accuracy, it plays the main role of high-speed acquisition, and the gimbal is limited to canceling its errors. The relaxed demands on the gimbal for high speed and accuracy make the terminal smaller and lighter. Acquisition and tracking tests show fast acquisition(80 to 160ms)and high accuracy with tracking-error angles from +/-2.8 to +/-7.4micro-radians. The optical loss caused by tracking error is 0.6dB on average. As the AUJ gimbal has narrow-elevation motion but a small size and covers the azimuth through 360 degrees, the terminal is suitable for communications among low-earth-orbit satellites.
