Abstract(in English) NOAA, AVHRR image is one of the most useful spaceborne sensors to monitor the global environment.The coverage of an AVHRR image is,however,too small to cover the whole area of the earth.One solution for covering a wide area is to make a mosaic out of images observed from a lot of orbits.Here,we propose an automated method for making a mosaic from AVHRR images to evaluate natural environment by using normalized vegetation index(NVI).In order to make a mosaic,we apply an image registration method to overlapping areas.That is,we register one AVHRR image onto another observed from a different orbit. The proposed method yields a high resolution mosaic image whole spatial resolution is the same as that at nadir point.We develop a simplified geometrical model giving a one-pass algorithm to convert pixel position in an observed image into that on the earth surface.By using automated generation of ground control point(GCP) pairs and piece-wise registration,spatial discontinuity in the boundary area is reduced to less than one pixel.Our method applies irradiance correction to images to be processed.In this paper,we describe the principle and the procedures of the method,and detail improvement of the geometrical model.The method is successfully applied to actual NOAA, AVHRR images in the area of southeast Asia and west Siberia.A mosaic image and an NVI map over the mosaic area are also shown.
