Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Catching whales has long been discussed internationally among the specialists and organizations concerned. The ecology or the life style of whales, however,is not yet sufficiently clear.Since Japan has been assigned at the International Whale Comitee as the responsible country,a monitoring system of whales consisted of a data collecting satellite on a polar orbit and a several probes attached to whales is proposed. In each probe,a GPS receiver, various sensors,a memory and atransmitter along with a power supply are installed. Ecological data of whales sent by uplink will be collected and stored in the satellite, which will be sent to the control station through a command link.Such a system would largely contribute to the global understanding of the ecology of whales.
