Measurement of an active array radar using active radar calibrator

Abstract(in English) To study the calibration technique for the TRMM precipitation radar, which consists of the active array radar, an experiment using an active radar calibrator (ARC) and the bread-board model (BBM) for the TRMM radar was conducted. The ARC has three functions of beacon transmitter, radar receiver, and transponder. After explanation of a method to obtain the antenna gain for the active array radar, the transmitting and receiving antenna gains of TRMM-BBM were calculated from the measurement results, which exhibit excellent agreement with the designed antenna gains. The method tested here is applicable to the TRMM radar calibration in the orbit.
