| Abstract(in English) | The discussion on the information and communication infrastructure is stimulated in Japan by the U.S.'s policy for NII and GII. Since it has been clarified that the Japanese technology level of the information and communication infrastructure runs behind the U.S.'s one, the policies for strengthening it are discussed actively. This paper describes firstly that many Ka-band satellite communications systems are proposed in the U.S., stimulating by the success of the NASA's ACTS (Advanced Communications Technology Satellite) experiments. The SpaceWay, AstroLink and Teledesic systems are briefly introduced as typical examples. Secondly, the Japanese policies on the information and communication infrastructure are summarized, in particular it is described that the harmonious development of optical fiber and satellite communications system has been emphasized since 1995. Experimental gigabit communications satellite, trans-Pacific high data rate (HDR) satellite communications experiment, G-7 experiment and HDR experiment using N-Star are mentioned. Finally future development issues are discussed. |
