Application of adaptive local nonlinear approximation to the certification of long-term care

Abstract(in English) Local nonlinear approximation technique originally introduced by Sugihara and May for chaotic time series prediction is applied to the certification of the need for long-term care for the care insurance program that set out last April in Japan. The approximating model is capable of representing the decision rule for the certification as the nonlinearly weighted sum of basis examples closest to the current situation of a frail elderly applicant. Themetric measuring the closeness is automatically optimized by means of the Caprile-Girosi algorithm. From the standpoint of recent work by Lee and Seung, we may view this method as a sparsely distributed and parts-based representation of the decision rule as a realization of"common sense"of the society.
