Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We review briefly studies of the formation of patterns during the growth of crystals, and discuss the combined effect of anisotropic surface tension and interface kinetics on the asymptotic shapes of growing crystals under the conditions such that the growth is governed by interfacial processes. Finally,we show the severe anisotropy of interface kinetics plays a very important role in the formation of polyhedral features of snow crystals using a model that takes into account both an interface kinetic process for incorporating molecules into a crystal lattice and a process for diffusion molecules through air toward the crystal surface.
