Measurement of optical fiber dispersion using optical frequency-modulation method and its application to in-service dispersion monitor

Abstract(in English) We propose a novel optical frequency-modulation method for optical fiber dispersion measurement. In the proposed method, we modulate the optical carrier frequency of the probe light, and derive the dispersion value directly from the phase deviation induced by the frequency modulation through the dispersion. This method is intrinsically insensitive to the drift of the group delay, and the dispersion can be obtained only from the output light. In addition, this method can be modified so that the signal light modulated with a binary data can be used as the probe light. These features enable the in-service monitor using the transmission signal light itself. In this paper, we first explain the principle of operation of the optical frequency-modulation method and show the experimental demonstration. Next, we describe the in-service monitor for the dispersion using the proposed method.
