Abstract(in English) We have developed a 1.3 μm-band optical fiber amplifier as a booster amplifier for optical access networks that is based on a Pr-doped fluoride fiber amplifier (PDFA). The output power of this amplifier is automatically controlled so that a signal with an optical power of -6~0 dBm is amplified to a constant power of +10 dBm. This fiber amplifier is equipped with the supervisory and automatic-control functions required for its use in a practical system. These functions include shutting down the amplifier if an input power decreases or an optical connector at the output end becomes disconnected, monitoring and controlling of pump LDs, and transmitting an alarm to an operation system. We show that the possible loss of a 156 Mbit/s system is increased by about 15 dB when we use this amplifier as a booster amplifier. Furthermore, we found that the possible loss is increased by 24-30 dB when we use the fiber amplifier as an in-line amplifier. We also show the possibility of using the fiber amplifier in a high speed system with gigabits/s bit rate.
