Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in optical fibers and optical devices has become one of major factors limiting the transmission distance in the recent very high speed (>40Gbit/s) optical fiber transmission systems. We propose and demonstrate a novel method to measure the PMD of optical devices. The device under test (DUT) is installed in a fiber laser cavity which can operate at multiwavelength. PMD can be evaluated by the wavelength spacings of the multiwavelength laser output spectrum. In our method, it is easier to identify the maximum extrema wavelength than in the conventional FA method. We measure the PMD of polarization maintaining fibers (PMF), stressed PMF's and the ITU-T round robin KDD samples.
