Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Image fiber is an important candidate for 2-D parallel optical transmission medium for high-speed and high-density optical interconnects. The transmission bandwidth of an image fiber is restricted by pulse broadening due to time of flight difference between individual cores in small areas and by skew due to uneven distribution of propagation time in the image circle. In this paper, we propose novel image fiber skew measurement method. The measurement results reveal that the parameters of all the cores have to be made uniform to achieve lower skew than 1 ps/m. Next, it is shown that the skew of an image fiber is increased by bending. The experiment data is compared with theoretical analysis. The analysis shows that bending have to be restricted less than several turns to achieve transmission speed of 1 Gbps/ch. Two methods to restrict the skew due to bending, namely, twisted image fiber and 8-shaped bobbin are proposed.
