A 2.56 Tbps Optical Packet Switch

Abstract(in English) A 2.56 Tbps optical packet switch configuration and two key technologies, WD/SD optical switch architecture and dynamic synchronization scheme are described. Number of SOAGs required to implement a 256×256 WD/SD optical switch is 1/8 that of a conventional SD optical switch. The dynamic synchronization scheme, which involves 3 techniques: fame alignment, instantaneous bit-synchronization and instantaneous frame-synchronization, realizes automatic synchronization between I/O interfaces and an optical switch and enables stable switching and synchronization within a short preamble pattern without precise adjustment of line length. We have developed a partially installed 2.56 Tbps optical core switch demonstrator in which these two technologies are implemented. Using the demonstrator, we have confirmed that, 1) the bit error rate is less than 10^<14> at the bit rate of 10 Gbps, 2) the sensitivity differences among 16 WD channels are within 2.1 dB, 3) both the switching time and the switching skew are less than 1 ns, and 4) the dynamic synchronization scheme enables stable switching and synchronization within a preamble pattern as short as 7.2 ns.
