Abstract(in English) | A WDM optical path-based IP backbone network is proposed as a cost-effective way of realizing robust IP-over-PTN systems. Optical paths provide a new layer-1 technology for constructing these systems. The introduction of layer-1/-2 switches to IP networks makes good use of IP router capacity. Between end-to-end IP backbone routers, the optical path, a fat and robust optical pipe, is defined. Optical paths accommodate IP packets via layer-2 frames. The cost-effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated from the viewpoint of overall network traffic transport capability and network node cost. Thus the proposed IP-over-PTN systems will create cost-effective and robust IP backbone networks. |
