Abstract(in English) | LiNbO_3 optical modulators are essential for large-capacity optical communication systems in the future. In this paper, we describe the design, fabrication, and characteristics of a push-pull type ridged Ti : LiNbO_3 optical modulator for 40-Gb/s optical duobinary transmission systems. With a two-stage CPW electrode and a ridge structure, impedance matching is obtained and the conductor loss is greatly reduced under the velocity matching condition, which result in broadening the modulation bandwidth. We have developed a fully packaged module of Mach-Zehnder optical intensity modulator with a half-wave voltage of 2.9 V in single-electrode operation (a half-wave voltage of 1.5 V in push-pull operation) at a wavelength of 1.55 μm. |
