Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Switching system mechanisms for the available bit rate (ABR) are implementation dependent. There are two types of ABR control algorithms defined in the ATM Forum. One is explicit-rate (ER) marking, and the other binary marking. The former is expected to become the main mode of ABR service because ER-marking switches perform better. However, binary-marking switches have already been developed and applied to networks. Thus, in near future, ER-marking switches will probably coexist with binary-mode switches. We evaluated ABR traffic characteristics for a mixture of ER and binary switches, and identified rate mismatches that result in unfair bandwidth allocation. We then evaluated two ER algorithms to see how well they handle this allocation problem.
