Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, some optical communication systems that handle WDM burst-mode data are proposed (e. g. optical packet switch). In this paper, we discuss the characteristics of an EDFA as a pre-amplifier in the WDM burst-mode receiver. By experimental results, we clarify that, even if the amount of optical packets is uniform in power, the gain characteristics of EDFA change depending on the optical packet-traffic pattern of WDM bursty data. Also, a band-pass filter can't be applied after the pre-amp EDFA in the case of WDM burst-mode receivers, so the ASE-ASE beat noise is a serious effect on the sensitivity of these receivers. With employing a Fabry-Perot filter, the power penalty caused by the ASE-ASE beat noise can be effectively reduced.
