Electroabsorption Modulator Modules for Broadband WDM Systems

Abstract(in English) Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) is an important technology for high capacity transmission systems. For example, using this technique, Tarabit/s transmission experiments were reported by several organizations. In order to increase the transmission capacity in WDM systems, broadening the optical bandwidth of optical components is important. We have developed multiple quantum well (MQW) electroabsorption modulator (EAM) modules for broadband WDM systems. By utilize anisotropic electroabsorption in MQW EAM, 40-nm (1530-1570nm wavelength range) bandwidth operation was achieved, and 100-nm (1500-1600nm wavelength range) bandwidth operation was confirmed by simulations.
