A study on the mode caupling effect in polarization mode dispersion measurements

Abstract(in English) According to Jones calculus,mathematical formulation of the polarization mode dispersion(PMD)measurements by wavelength scanning method is studied.Mode coupling effect of a model which consists On two polarizafion maintaining fibers concatenation with angular misalignment θis analyzed.Concerning with the model,θ dep endence of the mode coupling effect is studied both theoretically and experimentally.It is shown that the mode coupling effect degrades the output spectrum after the analyzer.Since the estimated PMD values depends on number of peaks(or valleys),PMD values could change discontinuously in spite of the continuous mode coupling change.Comparison of the results of wavelength scanning method with Jones matrix eigenanalysis indicates that mode coupling factor becomes to be larger than unity in some situations.
