A PMD Measurement by The Optical Pulse Method

Abstract(in English) In order to compare the two global description methods of the polarization mode, we make a direct differential group delay (DGD) measurement using a birefringent optical fiber with mode coupling. The results lead us to the interpretation that the principal state of polarization is more realistic approach than the eigen states of polarization. We also study the relation between the global with the local description of the fiber polarization characteristics. In case when the source coherent time is smaller than the DGD of the fiber; the reduction of the degree of polarization of light is observed due to the propagation of the fiber. Relation between the pulse distortion with the source coherent time is also considered according to Gisin and Pellaux's argument.
