Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, wavelength convertors for optical communication systems have been extensively studied. Semiconductor quasiphase matched (QPM) wavelength convertors have been proposed for polarization insensitive operation. In this paper, AlGaAs QPM devices were fabricated by a new method where the QPM gratings were formed by the directly wafer bonding technique. The QPM gratings were characterized using asymmetric wet etching of AlGaAs. Based on sum frequency generation, wavelength conversion from 1.55 um band to 0.77 um band light was studied. Polarization insensitive wavelength conversions were demonstrated. Conversion efficiency of -49 dB was obtained using a pump light of only 0.55 mW and a device length of 0.5 mm. It is considered that a higher conversion efficiency of practical usage can be obtained by improving the fabrication conditions.
