Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An in-line amplifier system operating at zero average dispersion is numerically analyzed in terms of its signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This analysis and a transmission experiment show that transmission performance is mainly governed by two aspects. One is the SNR determined by linear optical noise accumulation, signal pulse waveform, and receiver response. The other is the signal waveform distortion due to the combined effect of higher-order dispersion and self-phase modulation. NRZ and RZ signal transmission performance strongly depends on the performance of the transmitter-receiver pair as well as waveform distortion along the line. In connection with these results, several long-distance transmission schemes, such as solitons and WDM, are discussed.
