Characteristics of Acoustooptic Waveguide Switches for Giga-Bit Band Using SAW Waveguide

Abstract(in English) Collinear acoustooptic devices have unique wavelength-selective switching characteristics and are applicable to WDM photonic switching systems. This paper discusses an application of collinear AO switches to giga-bit band ATM photonic switching system, which requires fast switching at nano-second range. In order to increase the switching speed, high SAW frequency and short interaction length is indispensable. Optical switching devices using codirectional and contra-directional coupling by GHz-band guided SAWs are discussed.
