Spectroscopy of Integrated Type Optical Amplifiers Using Er-doped Garnet Thin Film Waveguides

Abstract(in English) We propose high gain optical waveguide amplifiers using rare-earth-doped garnet crystalline thin films in place of fiber amplifiers. In order to operate optical waveguide amplifiers near l.55μm wavelength of the optical fiber transmission window, we have fabricated slab waveguides of 1.3 at. % Er^<3+>-doped YGG on the YAG substrates by RF sputtering. In this report, we analyze quantitatively thin films with various Er concentration. Attenuation spectra of the waveguide showing the peaks that are due to absorption of the Er ions are presented and then, optimum pumping wavelengths near 0.98μm and 1.48μm are determined. The fluorescence spectrum in 1.55μm region of the film is measured by 1.48μm laser diode pumping and optimum signal waverengths near 1.55μm are determined.
