Amplification Characteristics of 1.58μm Band Er^<3+>-Doped Fiber Amplifiers

Abstract(in English) The amplification characteristics of silica-based Er^<3+>-doped fiber (S-EDF) and fluoride-based Er^<3+>-doped fiber (F-EDF) were investigated in detail by using 0.98μm and 1.48μm band pump sources. S-EDF and F-EDF had gain-flattened wavelength ranges from 1570 nm to 1600 nm and from 1565 nm to 1600 nm, respectively. The ranges were suitable for WDM signal amplification. Gain excursions for WDM signal amplification with each band pumping were less than 0.9 dB. Furthermore, we showed that 1.48μm band pumping had a better gain coefficient and that 0.98μm band pumping was effective for improving noise characteristics. On the basis of these results, we constructed low-noise and high-gain 1.58μm band EDFAs in cascade configurations. The EDFAs consisted of two amplification units pumped with 0.98μm and 1.48μm bands.
