Detection Characteristics of Even Harmonic Type Direct Converter

Abstract(in English) In mobile radio systems, weak received signal and strong adjacent channel signals exist at the same time, thus higher instantaneous dynamic range is required. Direct conversion is an effective technique for small sized terminals, but it is not so usual in mobile radio systems because of lower instantaneous dynamic range than that of a heterodyne receiver. A desired baseband signal is interfered by even harmonic mixing products, such as second order intermodulation (IM2) and LO noise. In this paper, we propose even harmonic type direct conversion receiver (EH-DC) employing antiparallel diode pair (APDP) that can suppress even harmonic mixing products. Design condition of the load resistance can be obtained to improve disadvantages of diode mixer, such as lower conversion gain and higher LO power. A developed L-band EH-DC without a low noise amplifier can be achieved IM2 of less than -90dBc when the input power is lower than -20dBm. LO noise is less than 30dB compared with a diode double balanced mixer. Noise figure of 18.5dB and IP3 at input port of 3dBm are also achieved. By these experimental results, a proposed EH-DC has the same instantaneous dynamic range with a heterodyne receiver.
