Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Low threshold vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have been developed for future parallel optoelectronics, including optical interconnects and data storage. The research field of surface emitting lasers is growing up rapidly and micro-amperes low threshold devices have been realized. The targeted wavelength region of surface emitting lasers is now from ultraviolet to infrared. In this paper, the recent progress of surface emitting semiconductor lasers, in particular focusing on applications of VCSELs for optical data storage such as CD and DVD, will be presented. Also, we discuss a possibility of a novel VCSEL optical head toward Tera bytes optical memories using scanning near-field optics.
