Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) For low bit-rate image coding, this paper describes a scheme of vector quantization (VQ) in the multi-resolution subspaces defined by the wavelet transform. This method is referred to as multi-resolution joint sub-image vector quantization(MRJVQ). To represent the correlation between scales, a larger vector is formed by combining several multi-resolution pixel components that belong to the same part of an original sub-image block, and is referred to as a joint vector. If the vector norm is smaller than a threshold, a part of the joint vector is suppressed. Vector quantization is applied to the other significant joint vectors, thus resulting high coding performance. Furthermore, we investigate 2-stage VQ in MRJVQ. At higher bit rates where conventional single-stage MRJVQ does not cover, the 2-stage version works and offers higher image quality.
