A New Vector Quantization for Wavelet Image Coding

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a new scheme for image coding using wavelet transform. We decompose the original image into 7 subbands by 2-level tree-structured filter bank. Vector quantization is applied to the high frequency subbands, while the lowest subband is coded by 2D-DPCM. A vector is formed by unifying n effective coefficients whose amplitudes are greater than a threshold. Then, in order to compress the address information of those effective coefficients, we do decision whether effective or not by each coefficient block instead of each coefficient. This scheme gives superior coding performance than that of the conventional adaptive vector quantization.
