Necessary and Sufficient Condition for M-channel Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks to Avoid Checkerboard Effects

Abstract(in English) Output distortions cannot be avoided in filter banks when subband signals are quantized in practical applications, even if perfect reconstruction conditions are satisfied. Linear periodical time-varying property of synthesis bank causes periodical distortion which is called checkerboard effect. In this report, necessary and sufficient condition for M-channel perfect reconstruction filter banks to avoid checkerboard effects is given. We give a new theorem which show that the condition that each polyphase component of synthesis lowpass filter has the same. DC gain and the condition that each analysis filter except a lowpass filter has a zero at DC are equivalent. The condition for paraunitary filterbanks is also given.
