Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To show source coding theorem under a fidelity criterion, we generally assume the existence of reference letters, letters in the reproduction alphabet which give a finite expected distortion relative to the source output. In this paper, we propose a new variable-rate, variable-distortion coding scheme and show that the average rate and average distortion in this scheme are bounded by the Nth-order rate-distortion function without reference letters. Since the proof does not depend on the detail structure of the source, it also applies to time-continuous sources and we can show a similar source coding theorem.
