Abstract(in English) | A new family of convolutional codes is introduced. The proposed codes belong to the class of generalized concatenated (GC) codes. Binary (punctured) convolutional codes are used as outer codes. Binary linear block codes of short length, and their two-way subcode partition chain, are used as inner codes. Codes constructed in this fashion are said to be GC convolutional codes or multilevel convolutional codes. The multilevel structure of the new convolutional codes is useful in devising suboptimal multistage soft decision decodings. This results in a reduction of decoding complexity with respect to single-stage maximum likelihood decoding. Constructions of convolutional codes for unequal error protection, with very low decoding complexity, are presented. |
