A Proposal on a Multicast Protocol for Live Media

Abstract(in English) Live stream media is delay sensitive with small allowable delay. Current conventional multicast protocols do not provide reliability guarantee. Even there are some researches provide reliability for multicast but long propagation and high packet loss rate make them inefficient. Any lost packet should be recovered within its allowable delay or else it will be useless. This paper proposes a new multicast protocol based on protocol relay concept. This proposed protocol focusing on allowable delay provides faster data recovery mechanism, which is appropriate for live stream media. Relay nodes are placed along the multicast tree. Data recovery is done between relay nodes. New techniques that enable protocol relay to request retransmission immediately without waiting time like in the conventional technique are proposed. It also reduces the number of time-over packets sent to receivers. We analyzed the expected traffic and loss probability of this proposed protocol comparing with other conventional multicasts. The results show that proposed protocol has loss smaller than the conventional protocols.
