Implementation of IP Unicast based Multicast Service on Active Network

Abstract(in English) We discuss an implementation method for IP-unicast-based multicast service on active network that utilizes StreamCode, which is a capsule-type active network system on which each packet contains a program described for forwarding behavior of its own packet. Because our implementation of the multicast service with StreamCode requires only small amount of memory and no residential process on StreamCode-nodes, many multicast services can be realized efficiently on active network. We have built a demonstration system on FreeBSD based PCs with PentiumIII 800MHz Processor and 100Base/T NIC. We confirmed that our StreamCode-node can perform 50Mbps MPEG2 multicasting with excellent quality at only 15% CPU load.
