Abstract(in English) In order to evaluate technical feasibility of the GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) and CWDM (Coarse WDM) technologies for configuring high-speed access networks, we have tested GbE and CWDM equipment using optical-fibers of the field in Tokyo metropolitan area. The test has shown that a Gigabit class IP access network can be feasible with reasonable performance for a metropolitan area with approximately 70km diameter. It also has shown that a care should be taken when transmitting a signal with severe timing requirement, such as video signals, since GbE and CWDM can not support timing performance for a long-haul link. Considerations on reliability, scalability and network management issues have also been discussed for the further study towards a commercial network.
