Architecture of Optical Access Network Systems

Abstract(in English) This paper presents technical and service trends in the access network, describes mainly the current state of conversion to optical fiber in the access network, and discusses the outlook for achieving FTTH. In the 20 or so years since the first trial, conversion to optical fiber in the access system has taken many turns but continues to advance steadily towards FTTH. In March of this year (1998), large-scale deployment began of a new optical access system (called the "πsystem") based on the passive double star (PDS) format. For the time being, this system will make it possible to provide telephone and other low-speed services using optical fibers that extend to points much closer to users, NTT is also developing a FTTH system that will achieve the cost of one telephone line at the same one of existing metallic cable. This technology is slated for completion by the end of the 1999 business year. In addition, the demand for high-speed, broadband services is growing steadily and plans for a service-driven FTTH are progressing as the communications market diversifies and the Internet continues its dramatic growth.
