Abstract(in English) | In a network system which consists of distributed switching nodes the resources in the network system must be efficiently managed. To realize the resource management one must know the load in the nodes by measuring the waiting time of packets. It is often the case that the network system cyclically observes the load in the nodes. A cyclic measurement, or polling measurement, has an advantage that it lightens the load caused by the measurement it self by adjusting the measurement cycle. However, the cyclic measurement has a defect that the observed packet delays give a rough estimation. In this paper we propose a traffic measurement system based on the following two methods, that is, while the packets which cause small jumps in work load are measured at equally spaced time epochs by polling method, packets which cause big jumps are immediately measured upon their arrivals by trap method. We evaluate the performance of our traffic measurement system. We analyze a queueing model of our traffic measurement system by a diffusion approximation and derive an explicit expression of the packet delay observed by our traffic measurement system. We also evaluate the number of measurements per unit time and discuss the its relation to the accuracy of the observed delay. |
