Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To deal with future uncertain demand for communication, network capacity assignment is required to be robust against demand unpredictability and fluctuation of demand. We propose a stochastic approach for robust capacity assignment. Here, possible demand patterns in the future are modeled into a probability space, in which demand is represented as random variables. Robustness is defined as expectation relative to the accommodation ratio of the demand, and the problem of how to maximize robustness under a cost limit is formulated as stochastic programming problem. By solving the problem, the obtained capacity assignment is expected to be robust against change in a predicted demand pattern and fluctuation of demand because the capacity assignment is optimized for various possible demand patterns. A case study shows that a capacity assignment obtained by using the stochastic approach provides higher robustness than that by using conventional approach.
