Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent spread of high performance personal computers and advances in the telecommunications technology have made Internet a tremendously growing new information "machinery". This paper first surveys present situation in high speed communications from the perspectives of personal, business and research usage. Also, a brief analysis of information characterized according to their real-time properties and bi-directionality is presented. Next, use of satellite communications systems for Internet services is proposed as the volume of traffic flow in Internet is mostly asymmetric. Finally, possible user demands and technical trend scenarios for future high-speed communications are discussed.
